that is pretty confusing isn't it.  i think i was trying - in a very clumpsy 
way - to differentiate between a formal collaboration and a adhoc or organic 
collaboration.

the end result is a collaboration - but at the start - people were just 
working on their own areas ... there wasn't a formalness about it. something 
like that.
